Right now, highways across the country are packed with travelers on what is the busiest travel day of the year, Thanksgiving eve.

AAA Hudson Valley Safety Educator Michael Sweeney says the roads won't just be busy before the holidays.

“That last day before heading back to work tends to be the busiest," said Sweeney.

Sweeney says the busy roads can make you weary.

“Don’t use the drive-thru; get out of that vehicle," Sweeney said.

He recommends stopping every two hours or 100-120 miles.

“Even if you start out the trip well rested, driving is a passive skill and tends to make people fatigued," said Sweeney.

The weather seems to be holding up, but when the elements get rough, it's good to be prepared.

“Probably the most useful item is warm clothing, footwear, and gloves in your vehicle," Sweeney said. "[You're] used to having a vehicle as shelter, so if you want to be prepared for the possibility of breaking down, that’s where the warm clothes really pay off."

AAA says more than 50 million people will travel this Thanksgiving, traveling 50 miles or more, an increase of more than 3 percent from last year.
