ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A Rochester mother accused of drowning her newborn baby in a bathtub was arraigned Tuesday morning.

Markiya Mitchell pleaded not guilty to a charge of second degree murder.

According to court paperwork, Mitchell intentionally left her 10-day-old son, Jeremiah, submerged in eight to ten inches of bath water for over an hour.

“A 10-day-old baby? I think that kind of speaks for itself," said prosecutor Sara Van Strydonck. "Any time there’s any sort of allegations against children in our community, I think the community pays attention. I think the community is outraged and asks  why. And certainly there’s nobody more vulnerable than a 10-day-old, I would argue. Nobody."

Rochester Police say Mitchell told them she heard voices before putting the baby in the tub.

But prosecutors say she is competent to stand trial.

“In the case at this point, she’s fit to proceed, meaning she’s competent. There has been no questions to her competency at this point," Van Strydonck said.  "And so we’re proceeding.”

Calls to the defense attorney for comment were not returned.

Mitchell's other child, a 7-year-old, is staying with family.

Mitchell's preliminary hearing is set for March 2 and the trial is set to begin May 8.
