Gloversville Mayor Dayton King isn't cleaning out his desk quite yet, after learning a voting miscount has given him the edge in the recent election.

The Fulton County Board of Elections says a reporting error originally gave Republican candidate Bill Rowback the advantage, but not anymore. Barring another recount, King will continue to lead Gloversville.

Fulton County Board of Elections Commissioner Lee Hollenbeck said the final unofficial numbers, 1516-1488, give King a 28-vote lead. According to Hollenbeck, there were miscounts in two of six wards.

Rowback said he was in disbelief when he heard the news, and hopes this type of mistake never happens again.

“I’m not holding the people that were counting at fault," he said. "I think over the next couple of years until the next election, they have to get a better system down, maybe not give the results until the next day."

The county board of elections said the official results won't be verified until Tuesday night or possibly even Wednesday. Hollenbeck says his team is already working to figure out how to avoid a similar situation from happening again.
