TROY, N.Y. -- The GOP tax bill cleared a hurdle this week, passing in the house of representatives. But some local legislators hope the bill doesn't go into law because of something left out.

According to Congressman Paul Tonko, 52,000 jobs have been created statewide because of the historic preservation tax credit. The program gives a 20 percent tax credit for the rehabilitation of historic, income producing buildings and a 10 percent credit for non-historic buildings built before 1936.

The Tech Valley Center of Gravity in Troy was given about $430,000 for its renovation, thanks to the program.

"This place is alive 24/7. There's people in and out of this building all day, all night, seven days a week," said Holly Cargill-Cramer, the executive director of Tech Valley Center of Gravity.

But if the GOP tax bill passes, the tax credit will be eliminated.

"We need that historic tax credit. It's economically wise to invest in that tax credit. It's an urban recovery program. It's a tax base extention program," said Tonko.

The Senate is set to vote on its verison of the tax bill in the coming weeks.
