TROY, N.Y. -- A Black Lives Matter rally convened in Troy Saturday morning where protesters called for an end to police brutality and demanded justice for two men shot by city police.
Dahmeek McDonald, 22, was shot and injured during a traffic stop in Troy this summer. He was wanted by state parole.
Edson Thevenin, 37, was fatally shot in April 2016, after police say he pinned an officer between two vehicles when they tried to pull him over for suspicion of drunk driving.
The handling of those cases by police and the District Attorney has been deeply criticized by some Troy residents.
McDonald's uncle, Messiah, lead a Black Lives Matter march Saturday from the scene of his nephews shooting to downtown Troy.
The group is calling for the resignation of District Attorney Joel Abelove, who recused himself from McDonald’s case, and has faced backlash for his handling of Thevenin's case before a grand jury. They also want to form a civilian review board to have a say in those who protect and serve their community.
The protesters are demanding a timely, transparent investigation into the shootings.
