SARATOGA, N.Y. -- Saratoga Deputy Sheriff John Brown lived a life dedicated to service.

“John viewed law enforcement as a calling, rather than a profession,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo.

The Marine veteran and 12-year member of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office was laid to rest Friday.

Brown died suddenly while training for a triathlon.

His legacy was honored at Grace Fellowship Church in Watervliet. Law enforcement from across the state gathered to pay their respect.

“We’re here to support the family and we will be here going forward as well,” said Richard Castle, Saratoga County Undersheriff.

Brown leaves behind his wife Jessica and their 2-year-old son Miles.

“Jess, you were guys were truly meant for each other. You're the best thing to ever happen to him and he let me know that often,” said Longtime friend Kevin Gill, speaking before the church.

Brown’s sister Deborah Bishop said, “Johnny’s light, his energy, his infections smile that was something he was born with. A gift to share with everyone he came in contact with. I look at Miles and I can see that same energy and light in him.”

Guided by a sense of duty, those who knew Brown say he will be remembered most for his compassion.

“He was a great guy, had a great smile and a laugh we’ll never forget,” said Zurlo.

This week, Sheriff Zurlo posthumously promoted Brown to the rank of investigator, a role he aspired to.

Following Friday’s funeral, Brown was laid to rest at Saratoga National Cemetery in a service complete with military honors.
