An Oneida County teenager is on trial for murder, and it’s now up to a jury to determine his fate.

Ricky Woods Jr. is accused of shooting Jamal Mathis in December 2015. Attorneys delivered closing arguments Friday morning.

The prosecution says Woods and Mathis were attending the same party on Leeds Street in Utica. When Mathis stepped outside, they say Woods followed and shot him from behind after Mathis refused to speak with him.

But the defense pointed out several discrepancies in the prosecution's evidence and says the witnesses directly linking Woods to the crime are not reliable.

“The witness testimony from the most important witnesses is, at best, patently incredible and motivated by wanting to help themselves out with the DA’s office cutting them a deal,” said defense attorney Devin Garramone.

"We know that Mr. Mathis was shot four times. The defendant must have fired every round in that revolver. He wasn't trying to scare Mr. Mathis, he was trying to kill him," said Assistant District Attorney Steven Feiner.

Following closing arguments, a fight between the victim and defendant's families broke out in the courthouse parking lot.

About an hour into deliberations, the jury requested part of the eyewitness' testimony be read back. The jury will return Monday to resume deliberations.
