SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Kirk Park Colts Junior Pee Wee football team is headed to the state championships this weekend.

The team of 5th and 6th graders practices about three times week at Syracuse's Kirk Park. And they do it with very little light.

They rely on a few light poles around the field, but mainly on the headlights of their parents’ cars. It gets darker earlier because of daylight saving time and this makes practice challenging.

"As far as throwing the ball and watching the penalty run, you can't see that in the dark and then the kids can't see the ball either in the dark. So, that's the main thing right there," said Rodney Thomas, the Kirk Park Colts Junior Pee Wee head coach.

Parks and Recreation Commissioner Lazarus Sims said the city does not provide lighting and never has to football fields. Also city parks close at dusk.

In the past, community groups and local organizations have raised money to purchase lights, and that's something Sims said could be done at Kirk Park.
