Wednesday night, nearly 50 parents packed the Menands School Cafeteria to voice their opinions. They came out to say 10 minutes of recess, is simply nowhere near enough.

“I was in shock, I think it’s unacceptable," said Johanna Clark, a parent.

Clark did not hold back at a district forum Wednesday night.

“I think it's obvious you were almost embarrassed about the changes, because I think it's pretty egregious," said Clark.

Menands School Superintendent Maureen Long was front and center in a heated discussion stemming from a major change.

“I'm not sure the folks who support it will come out tonight," said Long.

New this year to the Menands School District is a six-day rotation schedule for certain subjects and more instructional time, resulting in a reduction of recess. Beginning in September, students at Menands School have received 10 minutes of recess.

“I immediately thought about school when I was a child. As another parent was saying, you need that time outside," said Steve Boulet.

“I grew up getting 30 minutes; in hindsight, that's not enough. Forty, 50, 60 minutes is most beneficial to kids," said Clark.

Concerned parents used Wednesday night's platform to urge Long to take a closer look at benefits for longer recess, including skills like problem solving, social skills, agency and self-sufficiency.

For now, it’s unclear if anything will change.
