A Manhattan church that survived the September 11th attacks is closing in January 2018.

Saint Joseph's Chapel, located just blocks from the World Trade Center, became a command station and place of refuge for first responders.

Rent for the church more than tripled in 2014. Since then, the parish has been borrowing money from the Archdiocese of New York to cover the cost.

Parishioners from Saint Joseph's will be able to attend services at Saint Peter's and Our Lady of the Rosary.

Reverend Jarlath Quinn said in a statement: "Since 1983, parishioners of St. Peter’s Parish have worshiped at St. Joseph’s Chapel. Over the years, the Chapel has played an important role in the lives of many Parishioners."

"This was particularly true during the years after September 11th 2001 when the Chapel was used to comfort first responders, workers and each other."

The 9/11 Catholic Memorial at the Chapel will be moved to St. Peter’s, and a rededication will take place at St Peter’s, on or before September 11, 2018.
