RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- Donations are pouring into a homeless shelter in Rensselaer after items staff planned to sell as part of a fundraiser were stolen.

The director of St. Paul’s Center says more than 60 handbags, jewelry, scarves, and other items were taken from their building last week.

There were going to be sold on Facebook as part of a fundraiser to help pay for a new affordable housing facility.

The estimated value is between $3,000 and $4,000.

Since then, community members have donated money and dropped off new handbags and fashion accessories.

The center’s director also says two people, familiar with the facility, have been arrested in connection with the thefts.

Most of the items taken are still missing.

Despite that, staff expects to exceed their original expectations for the Facebook sale on November 28. They're still accepting donations.
