The attorney for Justin Walters, facing more than 50 charges in the shooting deaths of his wife and a New York state trooper, says he plans to submit an insanity plea if the case goes to trial.

Walters is accused of shooting Nichole Walters several times, then shooting Trooper Joel Davis in the chest during a domestic violence incident at his home in the town of Theresa, Jefferson County, in July.

Walters, a soldier based in Fort Drum, was formally charged by a grand jury. The indictment was unsealed Tuesday.

The indictment also accuses Walters of shooting at a shed with three people inside: Nichole Walters' friend, Rebecca Finkle, and two children, a boy and girl. Finkle was shot, but survived. The children were not injured.

Walters is accused of using a semi-automatic weapon that could hold large capacity ammunition.

The 50-plus charges include counts of murder, attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.
