CHARLOTTE -- Sheriff's deputies in Mecklenburg County are busy this Halloween checking on sex offenders to make sure the streets are safe for kids.

It's called “Operation Watchful Eye."

Nearly 900 sex offenders live in Mecklenburg County and authorities will verify each one of their addresses in the operation, which started late last week.

Deputies go home-by-home verifying the addresses of the 887 registered sex offenders in the county. They continue to look for the sex offender until they make face-to-face contact.

Authorities do the operation during October to coincide with Halloween so parents feel safe to send their children trick-or-treating.

The operation is a partnership with multiple law enforcement agencies which are required by law to do the checks twice a year.
