Dozens of Binghamton High School students will get a taste of college thanks to a partnership between the school and Binghamton University called STEM Upward Bound, which provides academic support and an on-campus, residential summer program in STEM.

The schools recieved a $1.3 million federal grant to run the program with the goal is to serve 60 potential first-generation and low-income college students.

"I myself was a first-generation college student, so I think what excites me the most is giving back to students who like myself are also first generation," said Shanise Kent, who wrote the grant application.

The program will be up and running in the next few months and is funded for five years.
