COHOES, N.Y. -- Cohoes leaders are now figuring out how to get the city's library, along with two community organizations back up and running, after a sewage leak forced the building to shut down.

It was discovered earlier this week in the basement of the library, which also houses Mary's Corner and Parson's Family Care Center.

Mary's Corner helps families with children up to three years old by providing them things like diapers, food, blankets, nursing needs, and referrals and Parson's Family Care Center is a daycare.

The city's operations director says parts of the library may have to be reconstructed.

Mayor Shawn Morse says they're working to get both the library and those businesses operating again soon.

“The sewage went through the sheetrock in several areas, the bathrooms and the kitchen that’s used by not-for-profits,” said Cohoes Operations Director Ralph Signoracci.

"We wish the library was open people rely on it, it’s a great public space, and is a vital, important part of our city,” said Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse.

An engineer with the project says the carpet and tiles must all be replaced to ensure a clean and safe environment for everyone.

The main library is expected to reopen early next week, and the entire cleanup is estimated to be done in the next few weeks.
