GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As community leaders continue to fight the heroin and opioid epidemic, the village of Green Island held a town hall meeting Wednesday night. The village co-hosted the event with the Albany County Sheriff's office at the Heatly School.

Sheriff Craig Apple says the county has already confirmed 25 fatal overdoses this year, with at least 65 more pending toxicology reports. He also says with fentanyl on the rise, it's making the situation more dangerous.

“People are making candies with it," Apple said. "We’re going into Halloween; that horrifies me.”

“There’s nobody or no town that is exempted from this," said Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan. "But together, we can do something.”

Along with statistics, parents and kids in attendance also received training on the overdose reversal drug Narcan.
