A letter was sent home to parents by Albany School Superintendent Kaweeda Adams Thursday, after district officials learned of a social media event beginning Thursday night and going into Friday called "Exposure Day."

“It’s essentially students [posting] hurtful things about other students on their social media sites," said Adams.

School officials say they are taking the information learned from middle school students seriously, and want parents to be aware of what their children are doing online.

“Parents need to talk with their children to open the lines of communication so that if anything is happening, they feel comfortable coming and sharing that with us so that we can help keep their students safe," said Adams.

Adams says district staff is prepared to help students who are having a difficult time emotionally, and while she hopes no students participate, if they do, they could face disciplinary action.

“We would certainly have to investigate it, but it could fall under cyberbullying, and then there would certainly be consequences for the behavior ... but what’s really important here is we want our students to feel comfortable to come to us to report anything that’s happening that might make them uncomfortable," said Adams.
