Downtown Albany's streets are the stage for dozens of large-crowd events each year, like Lark Fest, Pearlpalooza and Tulip Fest. As we see tragedy strike around the world, from Las Vegas, to Manchester to France, the city’s safety procedures are constantly evolving.

Acting Albany Police Chief Robert Sears says the department is constantly preparing for whatever threat may come its way, and that reality is putting increased pressure on the city financially -- from man power to purchasing equipment.

In the last few years, the police have had to start preparing for vehicle-style attacks. During Lark Fest, for example, they use barricades and large trucks to block off either end of the street. Officials say they already have an active shooter protocol in place, but with the latest attack, you can now expect to see even more uniformed police officers and other measures not visible to the public.

Albany police want to remind residents to be aware and be prepared to respond if you’re ever caught in an emergency situation.
