ALBANY, N.Y. -- The South End community honors the memory of Qazir Sutherland with a special run, ride and walk event promoting safety in city neighborhoods.

The 7-year-old was hit by a car and killed in 2013 after crossing the street on his way home.

The event is sponsored by the the city of Albany, Capital Roots and the Albany County Department of Health to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

"I think its really important to remember that a lot of our roads, and cities, and streets have been designed with motorists in mind," said Will Malcolm, Capital Roots. "And we need a more walkable and bikeable community. its easier to raise families there."

Organizers also showcased a new bike and pedestrian path that will connect South Pearl Street to the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail.
