The Schenectady County Legislature has voted to repeal a bill that allowed people to use small fireworks.
Tuesday night, legislators agreed banning all fireworks would be the safest move for the county. The original law allowing sparklers, caps and small fireworks passed in 2015.
Officials say the law was confusing for a lot of people, and it led to complaints and accidents with all kinds of fireworks, including larger ones.
"We looked at our 911 calls county-wide; there was a distinct increase after 2015 [that] continued last year," said legislator Gary Hughes, "and I think without action, it would have continued this year. The next step is strong public education from our law enforcement that this is not permitted behavior."
Plenty of counties in the Capital Region still allow small fireworks and sparklers, including Saratoga, Fulton, Schoharie and Rensselaer counties.
