TROY, N.Y. -- For the past several months, Teri Kippen and other members of a special committee have been trying to find that location, which would give city officials a traditional city hall for the first time since 2009.

Currently, City Hall is in a building on River Street, where their rent is $360,000 a year.

"From the beginning, it was clear that the current situation is not ideal or sustainable," said Kippen, the Special Committee chairperson.

The special committee on the location of City Hall presented their report on possible sites Thursday night. Some of the locations recommended by the bipartisan committee includes the Italian Community Center, the Boys and Girls Club, the Verizon Building and St Augustine's School.

“I’m more than happy to sit down with the group and take a look with them,” said Troy Mayor Patrick Madden.

Madden says he would like to see the city own its city hall at some point. However, he says the question is whether they can make it happen, given their financial situation.

“Buying a building, outfitting a building is only part of the cost owning a building," Madden said. "There’s ongoing maintenance and you really need to set up a fund for reserves.”

“We’ve been leasing space for $2.1 million. We still have two more years," said City Council President Carmella Mantello. "So in total, we’ll be spending $2.8 million in leasing space when we could potentially own our own city hall.”

Mantello says people have a difficult time finding the current city hall. She also says she would like to see the Italian Community Center become the new home for city officials.

“But at the end of the day, it’s what is best for the taxpayers,” Mantello said.

The mayor and city council members will now take the next few weeks to review the report before they regroup and decide where to go next.
