SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A community service project that was months in the making for a group of students was completed Saturday morning.
Fifth graders from Glen-Worden Elementary School volunteered at the Schenectady City Mission, serving nearly 200 meals to the hungry.
The annual service project is in its 15th year.
Students raised money to buy the food for the breakfast, then served hot meals to those who live at the city mission.
It's a rewarding event for students and for the people receiving the meals.
"It's just such a big deal to our fifth graders and to the community here," said Mark McCarthy, Glen-Worden Elementary School Principal. "I know the patrons here at the city mission look forward to when Glen-Worden comes."
"That’s what we need in this world today, the kids coming together as one to help each other," said Rodney Selby, a resident at the Schenectady City Mission. "It makes me feel great because that’s our generation coming up to do better."
This year, the students raised even more money than what was needed to buy the food.
They will be donating the more than $1,000 left over to the city mission.
