Many people in Troy woke up to find much more than they bargained for.
More than a foot and a half of snow fell in Troy on Tuesday, resulting in the city declaring a rare snow emergency. Starting Thursday at 8 a.m., residents are asked to park on the even sides of many streets. They’re asked to switch sides after 24 hours.
“We just simply don't have the place, places, to put it. It's a matter of physics,” said Troy Mayor Patrick Madden.
And those in Troy have their own ideas when it comes to how best to dig out.
“First, you got to do the sidewalk so you can get to the car,” explained Jay Root. “Then you have to brush the car off on to the sidewalk and redo the sidewalk, so you can get out to the road to do that part.”
“I honestly don't know. I was just going to put all of the snow into the street, but everyone is going to get upset,” said Nba Ahmed.
A number of crews are expected to be out Thursday and Friday, working to widen the streets. The mayor is remaining hopeful about the cleanup, and has a message to residents: “This only works if people move their cars from the streets when they are supposed to remove them from the streets,” Madden said.
Madden added that the city tries not to issue snow emergencies because of the cost. He said that, at this point, it’s too early to determine just how much this snow emergency will cost.
