Cuomo is calling for new water quality protections in a letter to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health.

The governor called for a loophole to be closed that doesn't require public water systems to be tested for contaminants.

The EPA’s current program requires testing for unregulated contaminants in only 188 of the state's 9,000 public water supplies.

The program does not apply to water systems with less than 10,000 people or to private wells.

The governor said this leaves millions of residents without tested water and is pushing forward legislation to change that.
