ALBANY, N.Y. -- With a car out of the sinkhole and water pressure returning to normal, the big worry on Wednesday was stabilizing a duct bank that holds all the power lines for Albany Medical Center and the VA Hospital.
"We're very concerned if we lose this duct bank, the hospital will be out of power, so that's our greatest focus right now," said National Grid Underground Manager Mickey Pomakoy.
His crews ordered a longer beam to go across the sinkhole to support the power lines, and created a plan to re-route the lines above ground just in case of a collapse.
The sinkhole formed Tuesday morning after a water main break at Elberon Place and South Lake Avenue. It swallowed Steeve Pierre's red SUV parked on the street.
"Getting mad, getting stressed, getting worked up over it is not going to help this situation any, and it's not going to make this process or situation any better," Pierre said on Wednesday.
He also lives in the apartment complex next to the sinkhole that was evacuated overnight in fear that the building could fall in the sinkhole. Residents in the 47 apartments were able to get back inside Wednesday afternoon.
Because of the incident, the city has closed Lincoln Park Pool until further notice. Anyone looking to cool off can still do so at the Arbor Hill Pool, the Mater Christi Pool and all City of Albany spray pads.
