MALTA, N.Y. -- "It was quite disturbing."

That's what Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said about the arrest of 29-year-old Marshall Gaudet of Malta. Gaudet was arrested on July 21 after what Zurlo called a lengthy investigation.

"Preliminarily looking at all the evidence, there's a lot of stuff out there," the sheriff said.

Zurlo said Gaudet set up a Facebook account using another name. According to the sheriff, the Malta man friended a 16-year-old and convinced her to send explicit pictures of herself. The two later met, and the sheriff said Gaudet allegedly brought the girl to his house, where he forcibly raped her.

Zurlo also said Gaudet allegedly threatened the girl not to go to police or he'd release the pictures. The girl reported him to police, and Gaudet was arrested and charged with: rape first degree by force; rape second degree, victim less than 17 years of age; possessing a sexual performance of a child; and coercion second degree.

Sheriff Zurlo said after the man's arrest, a search warrant was executed at his home, and investigators learned there may be other victims.

"Digital evidence has been sent to the [New York] State Police lab, where it's being processed, but preliminary review of some of the evidence shows that he was having chats with other young female victims," Zurlo said.

Gaudet was once a volunteer firefighter with the Round Lake Hose Company, according to Fire Chief Frank Mazza. Mazza said Gaudet was dismissed years ago, but wouldn't discuss any further information.

Zurlo said this case should serve as a reminder to be careful while on social media sites.

"Oversee what your kids are doing. This is a 16-year-old," he said. "There's probably other young females, and I think it's a parent's responsibility to make sure that parents know what their kids are doing on the computer."

Sheriff said he's dedicating his entire investigation unit to the case, which is now tracking down at least 20 potential victims.

At last check, Gaudet remained locked up at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail, $20,000 bond. Zurlo asks any potential victim or anyone with any information on Gaudet to contact the Sheriff's Office immediately.
