COHOES, N.Y. -- Police say around 6:30 Thursday a 16-year-old girl was hit and killed as she was crossing the street on 787 Northbound in Cohoes.

The coroner is on scene and family members were talking to police.

It's unclear at this time if the girl was in the crosswalk or if the driver ran a light.

Police say there have been several other fatal pedestrian accidents at this intersection and the mayor said they need to examine this stretch of highway.

"I'm truly sad, to know that somebody today will be a very sad family so just our thoughts and prayers to them," Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse said.

The girl's name is not being released at this time.

Police are still trying to determine what happened, and there's no word if the driver is facing any charges.
