The Warren County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide. It happened Tuesday morning on Thunderbird Road in Bolton. Police believe a man shot his wife, then turned the gun on himself. As Emily DeFeciani reports, the couple's 20 year old daughter called police after witnessing her mother's shooting.

BOLTON, N.Y. -- Police say it was a gruesome scene inside of a home on Thunderbird Road, where they confirm David J. Barnes, 55, shot his wife, Kimberly D. Barnes, 46 and then himself -- in front of their daughter.

A lieutenant from the Warren County Sheriff's Department says the 911 call came in around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning from a neighbor.

He says the couple's 20-year-old daughter fled to that house after witnessing her mother being shot. Police say the husband then turned the rifle on himself. Both David and Kimberly Barnes were dead when authorities arrived on scene. Kimberly Barnes died due to multiple gunshot wounds, while Barnes died from a self-inflicted wound to the head.

"They wake up in the morning, have their breakfast, hop on the bus and go to school, say 'Mommy, I love you,' and then they get a message in school that Mommy's not with us anymore and neither is Daddy," neighbor David Dougall said.

Police say the couple was estranged and had a history of domestic disputes. They had three children altogether. The two younger kids were in school at the time of the incident.

"The mom and the children have been residing elsewhere for the last few weeks. They came to the house this morning to handle some routine stuff, tend to an animal, and the dispute arose," said Warren County Sheriff Department Lt. Steven Stockdale.

Stockdale says the Barnes' two younger children have been picked up from school and notified of the incident.

"I saw them last week playing in the street," Dougall said. "They seemed like a normal family, but I guess the definition of normal has changed all of asudden."

Stockdale says all three kids are now in the care of their grandparents. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted at Albany Medical Center.
