Jack's Place, the home being built in Schenectady to house families of young patients at Ellis Hospital, got a gift Thursday -- that will help push the project over the finish line. Barry Wygel has the story.
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Construction has been ramping up at Jack's Place. The house, named for Jack Falvo III, will be used as a home for families of patients at Ellis Hospital and Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center.
"Totally amazing, how family, friends, relatives, strangers -- to support Jack's Place," said Jack Falvo, Jack's father. "Out of tragedy, comes something good."
When Jack died tragically, his family decided to honor his memory with a place for families to come and be comforted when they go through what could be the most difficult time in their lives.
The $500,000 project got a boost Thursday from Lowes, who donated $25,000 for supplies to get the project over one of its final hurdles.
"Lighting fixtures, bathroom fixtures, we need sheet rocking, and taping," said Falvo.
The one thing Jack's family has plenty of -- is help. Students from Capital Region BOCES have been instrumental in getting the work done, volunteering their time, while learning valuable skills.
"Quite honestly we have to turn some away. We don't have enough room on the bus or don't have enough room on the house to get all of the students that want to come down here," said Albany Career and Technical School Principal Denise Capece said.
"Their passion is incredible," said Falvo.
With the help of the students, project is being made day by day and Jack's family hopes to have the house open by late summer or early fall.
