TROY, N.Y. -- A massive fire Friday evening at an apartment building in Troy burned 25 people out of their homes. On Saturday morning, residents returned to Washington and 4th streets to see what could be salvaged.
Firefighters said that nine families lived in the buildings. No residents or responders were injured in the fire, which began around 6 p.m. Friday.
Tenants, family and friends helped to bring salvaged items out of the building by the box load. Kathy Darmatko, a family member of one of the people affected, found a cat inside - one of the few pets to survive the fire.
"I love animals, so it was a good feeling," Darmatko said. "All the fire damage that - at least some of the cats got out. I mean, we just got another cat out. My cousin went upstairs into her apartment and found another cat."
State fire officials continue to investigate. It's believed by firefighters that the fire started in a yellow building on the corner, but that has not been officially determined.
An online fundraiser has been set up for the people affected.
