SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- A Washington County Grand Jury returns an indictment against a step-mother accused of assaulting a child.

Authorities say Marissa Rice of Fort Edward was caring for her step-daughter, 4-year-old Kaiden Rice, last September when she allegedly threw Kaiden, causing her head to hit the floor.

Kaiden suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull and traumatic brain injury.

She spent several weeks in the hospital in intensive care.

Rice faces several charges inculding assault, reckless assault of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Schenectady County District Attorney said the office is prosecuting the case because the Washington County District Attorney's Office had a conflict of interest.
