COLONIE, N.Y. — Colonie police say a man went into the Beauty and Bliss Spa on Central Avenue Thursday evening and began stabbing his wife, who works there.

Police say people in the salon got help from two men driving by to stop the attack. Police say if people didn't jump in to stop it, she likely would have died.

Thomas Caufield, 51, was charged with attempted homicide in the early hours of Friday morning. He has been remanded, without bail, to Albany County Jail.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was in surgery. Her condition is unknown, however police say she went through a successful surgery on Thursday, and is in the intensive care unit.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with a stab wounds to his neck. Police say he tried to take his own life.

As police still try to figure out why Caufield carried out the attack, they're uncovering his history of abuse.

An order of protection was filed with Scotia police after he was arrested in June. Authorities say he he hit his wife's car while she was inside and then threatened to kill her and her family. "There were warning signs with him. People were aware of it. I Think she was taking the proper precautions," says Lt. Robert Winn.

The salon was closed Friday and will be closed throughout the weekend. Employees are asking for prayers for their co-worker.

The Salon is still closed today, and will remain that way all weekend. Employees are asking for prayers for their coworker. Meanwhile police have confirmed a history of domestic abuse in the marriage of Thomas Caufield and the victim. @SPECNewsAlbany https://t.co/DDYFdWKE24
