COHOES, N.Y. -- An attorney has been arrested, accused of selling heroin from her law office and home in Cohoes.
According to the Albany County Sheriff's office, the investigation started when a man told authorities he had purchased heroin from the law firm on Remsen Street. The sheriff's office started to put eyes on the building and even sent in an undercover agent multiple times to purchase drugs.
“In each time, it would be anywhere from four or five bags to a bundle,” Sheriff Craig Apple said.
He says the investigation lasted a couple weeks. On Thursday, they arrested and charged 38-year-old attorney Danielle Barker-Lange, the owner of Lange & Associates.
According to Apple, they recovered 38 bags of heroin, 20 strips of suboxone, as well as Xanax, oxycodone and amphetamines, all during a traffic stop. Search warrants were also executed at her law office and home.
“Most of this was on her person and in her vehicle,” Apple said.
After spending the night in jail, Barker-Lange was arraigned in Cohoes City Court Friday morning. She pleaded not guilty to the five felony and eight misdemeanor drug charges. Barker-Lange was also charged for driving with a suspended license due to a prior DWAI.
“Our key today was come to court and get her out on bail," said Andrew Safranko, Barker-Lange’s defense attorney. "Now we can begin our own investigations into the nature of the charge."
He says her status as an attorney will depend on the outcome of the case. Safranko also says it's too early to tell if she'll keep practicing law while her case is pending.
“Honestly right now I’m more interested in seeing how and where she is and what needs to be done to protect her case,” Safranko said.
Apple says it's rare to see attorneys arrested on drug charges. He says this case in particular was disturbing because it appears she was dealing drugs to clients.
“It’s a sad case," Apple said. "Somebody has entrusted them to help them, and instead it hurt them.”
Bail was set at $50,000, which she was able to post right after the arraignment. The preliminary hearing has been waived, which means the case now heads to county court.
