GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- Some in the community say they are becoming numb to crimes. But others say the latest in Gloversville is on another level altogether.

According to Gloversville Police, 27-year-old Delaney Akins, who appeared in city court Wednesday morning, abducted and held another person against his will for nearly a week inside the basement of a James Street apartment complex.

Court documents describe the kidnapping like something out of a movie. Akins restrained the victim by his hands and feet. The victim's injuries consist of burns, bruises and contusions.

Tuesday morning, he somehow managed to break free. The victim was headed toward Nathan Littauer Hospital, a nearly 1.5-mile walk from where he was held captive, but a passer-by spotted him on Kingsboro Road -- wearing nothing but boxers, a shirt and a towel on his head -- and called 911.

"I’ve seen girls in there. I’ve seen guys in there," neighbor Earl Brown said. "I’m surprised no one has ever said anything."

Police say several units in the building are occupied, but it remains a mystery to those outside its walls.

"I don’t know nothing about that building, I don’t know nothing about that building," said neighbor Paul Hody.

The relationship between Akins and his victim, why he held him captive and how he escaped are all mysteries at this point. Police do say, though, there is no known danger to the community at this time.
