ALBANY, N.Y. — Albany police have released new information after a man was shot by officers during an altercation Monday afternoon.
Authorities are identifying the man that was shot as 19-year-old Ellazar Williams from Binghamton. Albany police say the shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday after police responded to a call for a fight on Central Avenue with reports of a handgun.
Albany detectives who were nearby arrived to the scene and saw a man matching the description. That's when they say Williams ran through the back of West Hill Middle School, where he was shot.
Albany police say they found a knife on the scene that they believed belonged to Williams.
Right now, Williams is in the hospital in critical but stable condition. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Albany police.
