A grand jury weighs in on a police-involved shooting that happened in Troy in August of last year.
The jury decided Troy Police Officer Jarrod Iler was legally justified when he fired his weapon, shooting and injuring Dahmeek McDonald.
The shooting prompted community protests and concerns about police response in the city.
A lengthy FBI investigation presented a range of evidence, including surveillance video, social media posts and testimony from the officer and McDonald to the grand jury. FBI analysis supported the Troy officer's report that McDonald was driving his car toward him when he fired the shots. McDonald admitted he wanted to avoid arrest on a parole violation, but denied he wanted to hurt the officer.
Monday's grand jury finding does not prevent Troy police from taking possible disciplinary action against Officer Iler for the shooting. It also does not stop McDonald from bringing any civil action against the department.
McDonald's attorney says he questions the grand jury process in this case. He says it's reminiscent of other high profile deaths of suspects at the hands of police in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri.
"We believe sufficient evidence existed to charge Officer Iler for his use of deadly physical force against Dahmeek McDonald. Despite the lack of an indictment, we will continue to pursue justice for Mr. McDonald."
