PENN YAN, N.Y. — A missing child alert for a 16-month-old has been cancelled.

Sheriff's deputies in Ontario County were looking for 36-year-old Leroy Newswanger and his son, 16-month-old Glenn David Newswanger.

Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says both father and son were located at a Harrisonburg, Virginia hospital, safe and sound.

Povero says Leroy was asking medical staff for medication, and he requested an examination for his son. Hospital personnel thought his behavior was suspicious, and reported it to authorities.

Leroy was detained at the hospital and the child is in the custody of Child Protective Services with arrangements being made to bring the child home — about a seven hour, 400 mile drive.

"The family is elated and they're very excited to take part in the arrangements, if they can, to bring the 16-month-old home," Povero said.

The sheriff says both the father and son are in good physical shape and that charges will be sorted out between agencies locally and in Virginia.

Povero says deputies received a call at 4:50 p.m. Thursday regarding Leroy and the child's absence. Officials say Leroy was last seen in Penn Yan at 12:03 p.m. Thursday, wearing a maroon button up shirt while withdrawing cash from the Lyon's National Bank. He is reported to have an extensive mental health history.

Povero said prior to leaving the house, Leroy did farm chores; and took with him a portable battery operated radio — the radio in his truck doesn't work — a diaper bag and a child's snowsuit.

Leroy and his son are members of a Mennonite community. The sheriff's office was in contact with associated communities, who were fully cooperative and supportive in the investigation, according to Povero.

The sheriff said Leroy might have had concerns about a specific issue with the federal government and that there is no history of domestic violence with Leroy, who is the father of seven children with Glenn being the youngest.

An Amber Alert was not been issued because there is no evidence of an abduction because Leroy has full custody.
