HORICON, N.Y. -- Troy Beadnell was inside the main lodge at the Ridin-Hy Ranch when a fire broke out Friday afternoon. With flames spreading quickly, Beadnell and his staff quickly got the 20 people inside out of the building.

“I tried to put it out, but it just overwhelmed the building too fast,” said Beadnell, one of the third generation owners of the Ridin-Hy Ranch

It took firefighters several hours to get the fire under control. No one was injured, but the building is a complete loss. The main lodge included the dining room, a bar, rooms and the main office.

“It’s isolated, heavy timber, just hard to get some water on some of those timbers,” said Doug Smith, Horicon Assistant Fire Chief.

Firefighters say the fire started in a room on the second floor. They say it was caused by a guest who tried to put out a cigar on a paper cup. The Ridin-Hy Ranch was closed Saturday as crews began to clean up.

The popular Warren County ranch has served as a year round resort since 1940. It's been the getaway place for many living in the northeast. The ranch says 80 percent of their clientele is repeat business.

“All sorts of family celebrations and that’s what this is, it’s a family resort and memories,” said Matt Simpson, the Horicon Town Supervisor.

This is not the first time a fire has destroyed the main lodge. In 1982, a fire tore through the same building. The facility was rebuilt and now the third generation of owners say they'll to do the same.

"Hoping to have something going here. We got some out buildings here and have to find a way to get a dining room and a kitchen set up," Beadnells said. "We got a couple months to do that."

The ranch will remain closed for several weeks. The owners are hoping to have a temporary operation is up and running by December 26th.
