ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. — District Attorney David Soares announced Monday that one of the Capital Region's major drug traffickers is out of the game.

Darrell Chapman, 37, of Rensselaer, was arrested on the northbound New York State Thruway near Coeymans, along with his alleged accomplice Lacee Sousis, 20, of Troy.

According to Soares and the New York State Police, Chapman and Sousis had been carting 280 grams of heroin back to the Capital Region from New York City. Search warrants at Chapman's home and business turned up another 1.7 kilograms of cocaine, drug paraphernalia, guns and cash.

Both are charged for criminal possession of controlled substances, with more charges pending after a grand jury hearing.

"All you have to do is look at the assault weapons and the guns, and you can legitimately feel safe and take comfort," Soares said Monday, "knowing that this investigation was well worth the time and effort. We believe it saved lives."

Chapman and Sousis are jailed without bail, pending their next court appearance. Soares said Monday that although the two are believed to be major drug distributors, the investigation into their extended network is continuing.
