WATERFORD, N.Y. -- Authorities in Waterford are responding to a report of an attempted abduction in town. Town officials held a press conference Friday afternoon, discussing how they are handling the incident.

“We recognize that we have no higher priority or greater responsibility than ensuring the safety and well-being of the children of our community,” said Waterford Town Supervisor John Lawler.

According to police, the attempted abduction happened Wednesday evening on Third Avenue. They say a man in a black sedan approached two 7-year-old boys and asked them to get in the car. But the boys ran home and the man drove off.

“These two boys did the right thing," said Sgt. Robert Van Bramer of the Waterford Police Department. "They didn’t engage or depart with the person in the vehicle. They just ran and got their parents.”

So far, police say they have not made an arrest nor have they been able to locate the car. However, officials say the boys' report is credible, which is why a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the positive identification of that individual.

“We want to be very clear. We’re not alleging that there has been a crime of any kind committed, but obviously our police department would very much like to talk with this individual,” Lawler said.

In addition, the Saratoga County Sheriff's office will increase its patrol in town. Officers will also meet with children next week in school, giving guidance on what to do when approached by a stranger.
