A brother and sister from Clifton Park are the brains behind a new app. CenterSquare promotes local businesses by alerting users to nearby discounts. Instead of simply scrolling, a new app encourages users to stroll.

Brother and sister Adam and Erica Mason created the free app, which tells users about discounts in their immediate area. It shows deals, promotions, and events in 24 different categories, including restaurants, bars, arts and entertainment.

“We want you to be the center of your world. We want you to feel connected,” said Erica.

What may one day set the app apart is its Cannabis Connection, which provides information on medical marijuana dispensaries. Adam and Erica see opportunity in recreational legalization.

“It is only a matter of time before cannabis comes to New York State. We see it coming already on the east coast. We kind of want to get ahead of the curve and be ready for it when it comes,” said Erica.

Business pay an annual fee of $689 to be featured on the app. Membership comes with a Bluetooth beacon to alert nearby users.

So far, 15 businesses across the state are participating. They aim to expand across the Capital Region and, eventually, nationwide.
