From their backyard in Wynantskill, John and Sarah Trop are breathing new life into old furniture. The warm weather signals the start of busy season for custom furniture artists and their business Funcycled.

“We are trying to help people reuse instead of buying new,” said Sarah Trop, owner of the small business.

For the first time in months, they’re spray painting and distressing pieces under the sun. It’s full time work for these parents of two. John brings experience in carpentry and woodworking. Sarah has an eye for design. She also owns the business, launched in 2012.

Services have grown to include building custom tables and barn doors, painting kitchen cabinets and interior design. The Trops' home functions as a living showroom.

In 2015, they opened a store near Monument Square in Troy. Beginning next week, they’ll be open Tuesday through Saturday to capitalize on outdoor events such as the Troy Farmer Market, which draws thousands.

The Trops hope their products continue to inspire clients to get creative when decorating their homes.
