SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Inside Quad/Graphics' 1 million-square foot Saratoga Springs plant is the definition of "hot off the presses."

It's likely, at one time or another, something that was printed there has made it to your home.

"Everyone's familiar with People Magazine, Sports Illustrated; we do Entertainment Weekly, Business Week, The Economist," said Quad/Graphics Executive Plant Director Dan Frankowski. "You get on the catalog side: Lord and Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, LEGO."

With more than 400 clients, Quad/Graphics is one of largest commercial printing companies in the country.

"Social media, e-mail blast, direct mail and print are all part of a package deal [and] you communicate with the customer," Frankowski said. "We're the company that is putting it all together for the publishers and catalogers in the marketplace."

Quad/Graphics' plant is located just two miles from downtown Saratoga Springs. It opened in 1985 and has grown ever since.

"Over the last two years, we've added over 200 jobs here in Saratoga Springs. Print is alive and well," Frankowski declared.

Quad/Graphics has nearly 900 employees, and when they aren't printing the items that come to your mailbox or inbox. The facility includes a fully equipped fitness center as well as outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. Quad/Graphics also offers employees and their families access to “QuadMed,” the company’s full-service primary care clinic housed right on site.

"Just being able to pick up your prescriptions or just having ease of getting out of work or being in work and being able to head to the medical facility is great," said Sarah Currier, a customer service representative who also runs several fitness programs.

Quad/Graphics is also big on education. Schenectady native Don Sims is part of Quad/Graphics' apprenticeship program, getting a fully funded education and paid to work.

"The challenge keeps me here at Quad," Sims said. "Every day being engaged in something new, and every day interacting with positive people who are really going to push for the best for me."

"Quad is about that opportunity to grow yourself and go as far as you can. We create those pathways and opportunities to do that," said Frankowski, who started at Quad/Graphics 29 years ago as an entry-level employee.

Frankowski said that, with millions of eyes around the world on its material, a lot of attention and detail goes into each Quad page.

"To educate, to help commerce, to get the message out, that's what we do, and there's a lot to be proud of to be a printer," he said.
