Chautauqua County Sheriff's Deputies say a woman out walking her dogs was shot and killed by a hunter.

Rosemary Billquist, 43, was shot on Armenian Road in Sherman around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The hunter told police he accidentally hit Billquist while trying to shoot a deer.

He found Billquist about 200 yards away and applied pressure to her wound until an ambulance arrived, the sheriff’s office says.

First responders took Billquist to a hospital in Erie where she later died.

Investigators say the hunter is cooperating. The District Attorney plans to review the case.

No charges were initially filed.
