It’s as much a Thanksgiving tradition in Buffalo as the Turkey Trot: Pastor Eric Johns of the Buffalo Dream Center is once again spending this week with the city’s homeless.

Wednesday is the third day Pastor Johns is outside. On Monday, his first day, he walked 16 miles though the city. It was tough on his body but he knows it’s much more difficult for those who live on the streets.

His wife and daughters will hit the streets throughout the day Wednesday, joining him in his work.

"I know it's only a week long, so mentally I can get through it,” Pastor Johns said. “I'm under the bridge right now with a gentleman who's been up here for two months. Before that he went through a period of time where he was homeless for seven years. So, I can't really even imagine that or wrap my mind around it."

Pastor Johns' week with the homeless, now in its 19th year, also helps spread the word about his Boxes of Love program, which will give food and wrapped presents to thousands of families this Christmas.

This year, they're hoping to give away up to 5,000 toys.
