A bipartisan group hopes to raise awareness of what they call a global postal system loophole.
They say it may be allowing opiates and synthetic drugs into the United States from foreign countries undetected.
"Americans for Securing All Packages" says there's legislation currently in a House of Representatives subcommittee, the Synthetics Trafficking & Overdose Prevention Act, that would require the U.S. Postal Service to use "Advance Electronic Data," or AED, for mail shipped from foreign postal services.
AED includes things like weight, a description of contents and a seller's name and address.
"The U.S. has always set the floor for security. Unless we move, no other nation will move. We saw it for airline security, cargo security and the same is true of postal security."
A local Postal Service representative says they are working with foreign postal operators to secure this data.
She says they now receive AED for 40 to 50 percent of inbound packages.
