GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. -- A state corrections officer accused of seriously injuring a Grand Island woman in a hit-and-run is facing charges.

Edward Kuebler, 27, pleaded not guilty in Grand Island Town Court Wednesday.

Kuebler turned himself in two and a half months after he allegedly hit Dana Papaj on East River Road and fled the scene.

The 53-year-old woman has been hospitalized since the incident on June 13.

Kuebler's attorney says he turned in his vehicle a few days later and has been cooperating with police since then.

The judge still decided to suspend Kuebler's license based on the allegations against him.

"Today was just the arraignment. He was brought before the court, he plead not guilty. The judge set bail at $5,000. Now we're in the court system," said attorney Barry Covert.

Kuebler made bail shortly after his appearance in court.

Attorneys representing the Papaj family filed a notice of claim against Grand Island and Erie County in July.

They believe the municipalities were negligent because there are no safe walkways or warning signs posted for drivers.

There is no word if or when those attorneys plan to file a lawsuit.
