NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The Niagara Falls Water Board says discolored water in the Niagara River near the Maid of the Mist discovered over the weekend is nothing to be worried about.

The board's executive director says crews were performing routine maintenance at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Buffalo Avenue.

Officials say there were some accumulated solids and carbon residue in the water, which is what caused the inky color.

The water board says all of the particles were within permitted environmental limits.

The water also had an unpleasant smell, which the board says is a normal sewer discharge smell.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation did not immediately return a request for comment on if they're looking into it.
