Cheektowaga’s defense held Pioneer’s offense to just seven points, and the Warriors offense did just enough to give Cheektowaga a 14-7 win in the Class B Section VI final.

Keshone Beal and Rayshawn Minter ran for touchdowns in the second half to help Cheektowaga overcome a slow start and win their fourth Section VI title in five years.

The Warriors totaled just 51 yards in the first half, and trailed 7-0 after a broken coverage enabled Nick Rinker and Brian Wittmeyer to hook up for an easy 25-yard score.

Pioneer scored its lone touchdown with 47 seconds left in the first half. The score held until Cheektowaga took possession in the third quarter and put together a 14-play, 73-yard drive that lasted nearly seven minutes.

Beal finished off the drive with a one-yard keeper and converted a two-point conversion on a second quarterback run to give the Warriors an 8-7 lead.

Cheektowaga picked up great field position with just over five minutes left when Quaron Trotter’s blitz forced a tipped pass that was intercepted by Isaiah Sharpe.

The Warriors faced fourth-and-one, but a surprise jet sweep to Rayshawn Minter went 13 yards for a touchdown.

Cheektowaga failed on the two-point conversion but extended their lead to 14-7, the final margin.

Cheektowaga’s dominance on defense isn’t a recent trend; the Warriors have shut out five of their opponents this season, and all but one of their opponents was held to eight points or fewer.
