Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his Republican challenger Marc Molinaro have agreed to a one-on-one debate on Tuesday on WCBS.

The debate will be pre-taped in the early afternoon and air on WCBS-TV in New York City at 7 p.m.

Molinaro, in a statement and conference call with reporters, announced he had agreed to appear at the debate, which came after a protracted, multi-day series of public negotiations and taunts over whether Cuomo would agree as well.

“This is an opportunity to hold the governor accountable,” Molinaro said in the conference call.

At the same time, Molinaro wants two more debates focused on upstate issues held in Buffalo and in the Southern Tier region.

“New York and downstate voters deserve a debate and we have one, with another possibly to come, but upstate New York under Andrew Cuomo’s failed policies has lagged the state and the nation, they deserve better,” Molinaro said. “We are one state and all New Yorkers deserve a voice.”

Cuomo on Friday agreed to a radio debate on Saturday morning, a suggestion Molinaro rejected.

“After days of ducking the debate, we’re glad Marc Molinaro has finally agreed,” said Cuomo spokeswoman Dani Lever. “See you tomorrow.”

This would be Cuomo’s first one-on-one debate with a general election opponent since 2010. In both 2010 and 2014, Cuomo appeared at forums that included the independent party candidates. This year, Cuomo also appeared in a one-on-one primary debate with Cynthia Nixon during the Democratic primary.

Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins, Libertarian Larry Sharpe and independent candidate Stephanie Miner, along with Molinaro, have agreed to appear at a League of Women voters forum later this week in Albany. Cuomo has not accepted the invitation as of yet.
